M&V is Conceptual

This picture, a random shot on a random day, from the sixth floor of 1400 Smith Street. AKA ENRON Energy Services.
What's going on here? Do you see malfeasance? Engineering? Risk Management?
In the moment, and across time, the team at ENRON looked at the physical world and the energy demanded of its inhabitants as a constantly fluctuating set of probabilities.

Fast forward to CMVP training scribbles from June 2022. It's the same story. Quantifying the absence of energy requires a broad understanding of what is stable, and what is variable. Tools and processes to accomplish settlement must not ignore uncertainty - they should embrace it.
M&V is too important to be left to the engineers? Maybe. Or maybe Measuring and Verifying is perfect for engineers. But MM&V (Measuring, Modeling and Verifying) requires additional cognitive and attitudinal qualities.
What makes someone good at MM&V? That's what we'll investigate on this site in the years ahead.
